Traditional Medicare (Part A & B)

Traditional Medicare provides both hospital insurance and "typical" medical insurance, covering doctor's visits and some preventative care.

Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A is also known as Hospital Insurance. This helps to cover costs incurred during stays in medical facilities. You cannot purchase Medicare Part A unless you are also enrolled in Medicare Part B.

Most people are eligible for free premiums for Medicare coverage, but it depends on how long you have paid into Medicare through your taxes. If you have not paid into Medicare, then it can also be purchased for a monthly premium.

This portion of Medicare kicks in after you have met your deductible for each hospital stay. After that, Part A pays most of the costs while you pay coinsurance. There is no limit to the number of hospital stays, or “benefit periods” in a given year.

Covered

  • Hospital in-patient care
  • Care in a skilled nursing facility
  • Short-term nursing home care
  • Hospice care
  • Care in home

Not Covered

  • Long-term nursing home care
  • Hospitalizations outside the US

Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B is more like your typical medical insurance. It covers doctor’s appointments, preventative care, and other medically necessary services. You pay a premium for this coverage monthly regardless if you use these services in that month.

Unlike Medicare Part A, your deductible is met once per year. After that you pay 20% of covered costs as coinsurance.

Covered

  • Ambulances
  • Walkers/Wheelchairs/Scooters
  • Blood sugar meters and strips
  • Preventative care
  • Medically necessary services

Not Covered

  • Dentures
  • Acupuncture or many other "Alternative" Health Treatments
  • Hearing aids
  • Most dental care
  • Prescription glasses

Note that Medicare is just like other insurance plans in that it does not cover 100% of the cost for approved care. This means that you still pay deductibles, copays or coinsurance, as well as possible out-of-pocket expenses. If that makes you a little uneasy, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Simply ask an agent at our office about supplemental insurance.

Additional Medicare Info:

  • Medicare Prescription Drug Plans

There are two ways to obtain prescription drug coverage under Medicare. Note that medications are not covered under Medicare Part B (traditional Medicare); you have to enroll in either Part D (Medicare prescrption drug plan) or a Medicare advantage plan to receive these benefits.

Medicare Part D is provided through the Medicare system like Medicare parts A and B. The deductibles and premiums vary depending on which plan you choose and what medications are covered in each plan’s formulary.

    Medicare Part D: Prescription Drugs

Part D covers a portion of your costs for

    • Insulin
    • Prescribed medications in Part D’s formulary (list of covered drugs)

Medicare Part D does not cover

    • Prescribed medications not included in Part D’s formulary

Your other option for prescription coverage is to enroll in a Medicare advantage plan (see below). When you are enrolled in an Advantage Plan, you cannot enroll in Medicare Part D: you have to choose one or the other. While Part D is provided through the Medicare system, Advantage Plans are provided through insurance companies so be sure to check if your pharmacy is in-network for the plan you choose.

  • Medicare Supplements (Medigap)

Medicare Supplements, or Medigap, does exactly as the name implies: they supplement your existing Medicare plan to cover some or all the gaps in your coverage. They’ll cover the co-insurance costs that Part A doesn’t and even cover some costs that are not covered by Part B. These supplements are similar to Medicare Parts A and B in that you can choose/keep your doctor and preferred hospital if they already accept Medicare.

There are 10 different Medicare Supplement Plans, so you are sure to find one that tailors to your specific needs and budget. Some plans cover your deductibles, some limit your out-of-pocket expenses, and some even cover foreign travel emergencies.

  • Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage is an alternative to Medicare Supplements. It’s more of a bundle type plan. It combines Medicare Part A and Part B into one plan as well as offering prescription coverage. This can lower your monthly premium costs overall, but since these plans are provided by private companies, it may not have as widespread of a coverage network as Medicare does.
